Every year, towards the end of Term 4, Mathis Dance Studios presents our annual concert performance involving the entire school.
The concert is a very important part and the highlight of our dancing year. We encourage all students to participate, as they will be demonstrating what they have achieved to parents, family and friends.
‘Concert time’ is very exciting for our students and they love the experience of performing before a live audience. Each student performs a dance for each type of dance discipline they learn.
Our annual concert is based on either a pantomime or musical play format. This provides our students with an opportunity to incorporate singing and acting, as well as dance. This is another fantastic opportunity to extend their confidence and build upon their theatrical performance skills. Students also have the opportunity to audition for large roles as well as smaller parts and parts without lines.
Previous years we have done The Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

With the support of Dance Around the World Tours, Mathis Dance Studios was given the amazing opportunity to perform at Disneyland in California in 2015.
The program offered our participating students to attend dance workshops at the Disney Performing Arts Centre and The Edge Performing Arts Centre. Students also performed a choreographed routine in the following locations:
- Main Stage, Disneyland
- Main Street Parade, Disneyland
- Hollywood Boulevard, Downtown LA
- Universal Studios
In 2015 we were fortunate to gain selected entry into The Cheerleading and Dance World Championships and placed 11th.
Hosted by The United States All Star Federation (USASF), more than 120 USASF/IASF member event producers across the U.S. and in over 40 countries around the world qualify top teams at their premier national championships to compete at The Worlds.
This international event brings together more than 9000 cheer and 3500 dance athletes to vie for world champion titles in senior and international club divisions and categories.
DANCE CANCER INITIATIVE
Hosted by Penny Palman (Editor, Fitness Instructor, The Bachelor S1), the DCI brings together dance groups from across Australia to perform in a non-competitive environment. The show is filmed and later broadcast on Foxtel's Aurora community channel. Money raised on the day and from the broadcast is donated directly to the Cancer Council Victoria for their research, counseling and well being programs.
More and more people are affected in some way by cancer, either directly or by knowing someone who has battled this disease. As performers we can do something to help give back to those diagnosed with cancer.
DCI is an opportunity to showcase our Mathis Dance Studios talent in front of a national audience. Each year we choose a group of students to perform at this event and require additional rehearsal time to learn the routine.
Designed to provide our senior students with further performance opportunities, our Cabaret Show is held mid year.
The senior dancers spend two terms learning choreography in many different styles to put together a cabaret show to entertain family and friends. These routines are performed at an outside venue with lighting, stage settings and a big dance floor, while family and friends are invited to sit at round tables watching, eating and drinking.
It is a great social night for the parents and families while giving the older students an opportunity to experience performing in a different environment and to learn to perform in a more intimate setting.
Before Term 4 concludes, our school hosts Presentation Day, giving our teachers the opportunities to present students with their exam results and provide recognition to students for the hard work throughout the year. Our troupe students also perform a routine from their competitions.
Some of the awards we offer include:
- Most improved
- Class champion
- Student of the year
Choreography is the “Art of creating and arranging dances”. It plays a big role in dancing and is as important as learning the technique of dance.
At Mathis we understand the value of choreography and encourage all students (even the littlies) to learn and explore choreography. We give students the opportunity not only to create their own dances but to choreograph groups of dancers also.
During the year we have an internal choreography competition. Students are encouraged to make up their own solos, duets and trios. They perform their work for an audience and a trained adjudicator judges their choreography. Each student is given constructive feedback to help them with their work.
It is a really fun day and it is a pleasure to see all the students encouraging and supporting each other in their efforts.
